Get to know the coaches who make our Community Strong. This month we’re catching up with Coach Lyss, who joined Defined in 2021.
Alyssa’s love for coaching began with teaching dance to children. Watching them make connections and unlock their capabilities inspired her to take her teaching to the next level as a CrossFit Certified Level 2 Coach.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I have a background in dance and used to teach children’s dance classes. That’s really where my love for teaching began, and eventually I transferred that into coaching at Defined in 2022 after joining the community a year prior.
What do you love about coaching at Defined?
I love forming connections with all our athletes – it’s really something that happens both on and off the floor. As soon as people walk in, you start those connections. Maybe they had a bad day and need an hour to shut their mind off and relieve stress. Maybe they had a really good day and need to tell somebody about it. I’m not just their coach on the training floor, I want to be someone they can go to anytime they need it.
What’s your favorite and least favorite exercise/movement?
I’ve got a mean bench press. I love a bench day. If I see dumbbell step-ups in the workout, it’s going to get pretty bad for me. I’m already short, so adding any extra weight in my hands when traveling upward is going to get spicy.
What does #MoreThanAGym mean to you?
It means having a community that supports you on and off the training floor. Lifting each other up and cheering each other on, the good days and bad.
What's one piece of advice you'd give someone who is just starting their fitness journey?
Just keep showing up. When you show up, you move forward.
